It was a CRAZY busy weekend! The week was a little chaotic. I spent most of the week cleaning the apartment in anticipation of my mom & mother-in-law’s visit. They arrived Thursday night, & left Monday morning. Not wanting anyone to be bored, I did my best to keep us busy all weekend.
We started the weekend with a day trip to one of my favorite cities, DC. We made a visit to my favorite’s memorial. I’m still obsessing over Lincoln, and standing in that beautiful building & reading the engravings on the walls was very moving for me.
We could not have asked for a more beautiful day for our first adventure. Unfortunately, I exhausted the moms. I estimate that we walked about 9 miles, and they were exhausted by about 7:00. Saturday we spent the day in Williamsburg. We had another absolutely gorgeous day. We started the day with pedicures & lunch, before walking around Colonial Williamsburg.
It was also a day of seeing pretty… interesting things. We saw a guy with a giant pet iguana. He said it was pretty much his dog. He walked it, it roamed free in his house & used the bathroom on puppy pads. He said it was friendly and I could pet him. I did, but he was snacking on clover at that point & scurried away.
After Williamsburg, we went to a winery for a wine tasting. The history of the place was more interesting than the wines we tried, and unfortunately I didn’t take any photos.
Our next stop was Yorktown. We went home & got Hermione, and went on my nightly walk. We parked at the battlefield, and saw a large group of historical re-enactors & their camp set up by the battlefield. It kind of took away from the effect seeing a few of them on cell phones, but it was still pretty cool. Sunday was the most delicious day of the weekend. We started the day with a delicious brunch at Venture, where I had a mimosa & had the French toast (again). This meal was so good, and I was really happy that the moms enjoyed it.
After brunch, we headed to the beach. The initial plan was to head to Virginia Beach, but (as usual) the traffic was a nightmare. So, I took them to Fort Monroe instead. I had only been there once before, and was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. The beach wasn’t overly crowded, there was a lifeguard on duty, and there was plenty of parking. We spent over three hours on the beach, which has to be a record for me…For dinner that night, I was really excited to take them to Lé Mu. I haven’t actually had dinner there since their opening night in March. The food was incredible, as usual.
I started with the fried green tomato appetizer. This was served with red curry rice & tom yum braised greens (a mixture of beet greens & collards). This was absolutely fantastic. The greens were some of the best I ever have, and I absolutely loved that he incorporated the beet greens (he used beets in another dish), instead of tossing them out. For dinner I actually had the vegetarian option: red curry grits with grilled eggplant, roasted tomatoes, green beans, & goat cheese. This was incredible. The grits were so good, and I loved the eggplant. I had actually never had eggplant before, and I loved it. For dessert, we shared the grilled Thai tea pound cake with lime marscarpone & a summer berry compote. I was SO full by this point, but I could not stop eating. It was perfect. The moms went home yesterday morning and I spent another holiday without Graham. As crazy as it sounds, this day was harder than being alone on our anniversary, or my birthday. Seeing all of my news feeds full of pictures of military personnel, flags & cemeteries put me in kind of a dark place. I know he’s safe (probably safer than I am with these crazy Virginia drivers..), but he’s the love of my life and I worry about him constantly. Also, according to timehop, we’ve hiked with Hermione on May 25th for the past two years, and looking at the pictures made me miss him so much it hurt. We’re getting through this deployment, and it’s been easier than any of the others. I miss him life crazy, but we’re both staying really busy, and time is flying by. We’re almost 1/4 of the way through it, and I absolutely can’t wait for him to be back home with me & the animals.
